East/West/Queens
The thing I adore about being in the states is the little everyday things that make this place so enchanting. Ever since I was a kid I read american superhero comics, in those comics were words, phrases and images that became ingrained into me and my thought process. I knew what Twinkies were 25 years before I ever actually tasted one, I always wanted a glass of OJ and was desperate for Oreos. I knew what a fire hydrant was long before I ever set foot on american soil. But once over here I discovered that there were millions of other mudane objects that i found fascinating because they were uniquely American, one such object is the telegraph pole. These giant weathered poles are everywhere and everywhere they are covered with staples and nails, all that remains of the notices that once were tacked onto them. They are so sculptural, the textures so deep. I had toyed with producing a series of prints based on these poles, but I wanted a more direct, a more immediate way of capturing these textures. So I decided to use porcelain to press into the poles and see what results I could accomplish.
.... I painted the pocelain with thick black oxide and white slip...
....
.... thanks to the genius of Audrey Wilson at the Washington Glass School I was able to take a plaster mould from the porcelain and then slump glass over this mould to create these beautiful glass casts.
....this one is till on the plaster mould..
